Radio Silence

I don't mean to be so quiet lately, things are just very busy at work and in life.  However, that doesn't mean I'm neglecting my running.  I realize that I'm a little behind on my overall mileage for the challenge so lately my goal has been to run more than 6.8 miles every two days.  It is just a little mental game I'm playing with myself, but it keeps me on track and seems less daunting than just saying I need to run an average of 3.4 miles every single day.  Instead, I can break up the 6.8 (and greater) however I choose.  For example, today at lunch I ran 3.7 miles, tomorrow I'll do 3.3 and I'll have a net of 7!  That will help me start overtaking that deficit I created when I slowed down in February.  Hopefully by July or so I'll be getting caught up on all my miles!

Friday Friday!

Happy Friday!  I did a kind of weak 4.9 mile run at lunch today - I think I need to remind myself that I ran a half marathon less than a week before and might not be able to average 9:30 miles every time I run.  Anyway, here is your cute picture of Del for Friday (look at that laugh!):

Half Recap

The half marathon definitely deserves its own post - so here it is.  On May 15th Anna, Julie and I travelled to Green Bay so that Anna could run the full marathon and I could run the half.  Julie came along to provide support and comic relief. (And take extremely embarrassing pictures of me).  Anna has done a lovely job of writing up our weekend experience at so take a look at her page as well!

I have to say that the run went absolutely fabulous.  Anna and I woke up bright and early and sported our runningfordel t-shirts:

Can you believe how happy we look when about to embark on 13.1 and 26.2 miles???  Well if you think that's happy, just look at me at Mile 4 (I can't believe I'm posting this picture):

Anna looks appropriately happy, I look like a nut! (That's because I'm nutty about raising money for AHC!)  Anyway, I have to say this run was so much easier than the half marathon I can in September, before Del had been diagnosed with AHC and I began running like a crazy fool.  I think that is for two reasons:  First, I am just better trained this time around.  Second, I am running for Del!!  When you have some real inspiration any task seems easier.
I would like to give Anna a great big shout-out and thank you for all she has done to support the AHC Foundation!  Anna has raised $1400 to fund research for AHC!  Truly Amazing!!
I also would like to thank Julie for snapping these pictures and taking the trip to Green Bay with us, I really couldn't have had better companions for the weekend.
Finally, here is a shot of my Garmin (another post to come about that) showing that I finished the half marathon in around 2 hours 7 minutes - (the garmin time and the official time very slightly).

PIE! (And a Half Marathon)

This is the end of a long and exhausting, but totally rewarding, weekend!  Today I ran the Green Bay Half Marathon and Anna ran the full marathon.  I'll be dedicating my next post to the half marathon but for now I'm happy to report that I ran the half marathon in 2:07, a personal best by about 15 minutes!!  Once I steal all the wonderful pics that my friend Julie took I will post some here.

However, since I had to take it easy on Friday night, I took the opportunity to make a pie!

Strawberry rhubarb pie to be exact.  I picked up some fresh rhubarb at the local farmers market downtown, and whipped up the pie on Friday night.  It was delicious, if I do say so myself and Anna, Julie and I enjoyed some before we hit the road for Green Bay on Saturday afternoon.

If you haven't already checked it out, please check out my friend Anna's blog!
Anna has been doing an amazing job of raising money for the AHC Foundation and also in training for her 3RD marathon!! That's right, her third!

I would also like to thank Jennifer Deledda, Christy Wikel-Wright and John and Antoinette Hall for their generous donations to the cause - we just keep going!

Happy Mother's Day!

I hope you all had a wonderful Mothers Day, but I especially want to recognize all the mothers out there of children with AHC.  I have seen firsthand, through my sister's dedication to Del, the love and energy that you put into ensuring your children's well-being.  I can't really begin to understand how difficult some days can be but somehow you find a way to keep going.
Today I ran 6.5 miles for all of you mothers, and while it wasn't easy, I know I have no idea what you face everyday.

I have a special thank you to Nancy Rhatigan for her donation, and for pushing us over $17,000!!

Half or Full?

That is the question.  I will be traveling to Green Bay, Wisconsin on May 15th to run the half or full marathon.  Let me explain.  I had all intentions of running a half marathon to support my friend Anna, as she sets out to run her third marathon and dedicates that race to the AHC Foundation.  However, when I went to sign up for the half marathon several weeks ago - to my surprise - it was full!! Only registration to the full marathon was open.  I thought I might be clever and be able to run the half marathon even though I had signed up for the full, but the race organizers were one step ahead of me and strictly prohibit people who sign up for the full marathon from turning at the 11 mile point to finish the half as opposed to the full.  Should you pull this stunt you will not be able to participate in post-race activities.  How weird would it be to be standing outside of Lambeau Field having just run 13.1 miles and feeling like a criminal??  So - I have decided I'll just run until I can't run, and then I'll walk, or I'll turn around and head back at that point, knowing I gave it my all.  Some people would call this idea crazy and they would be right.  I have made the promise to Boris that I will take any signs my body is sending very seriously and stop when it actually tells me to stop.  He has very wisely reminded me, its not about this marathon, its about running 1000 miles for Del, and if I overdo it now, there is no way I'll reach my goal. So - May 16th is a big question mark!!  We'll just have to wait and see how it all goes.

I have very heartfelt thanks to send out to Evan Roze and Janna Davis, as well as Alec and Carissa Gralewski!! Thank you guys so much for your support, especially as this fundraiser nears its halfway point!!  Every dollar motivates me to keep on running!
